Angela Shelton: Naturist Kid and Sexual Abuse on the Ricki Lake Show

Angela Shelton – growing up as a naturist kid:
The movie’s main theme is sexual abuse, inspired by her own abuse as a child, allegedly from her dad and step mother.
She starts her narrative on the Ricki show, and one of the first things she says is, (this is not verbatim, incidentally, but close enough.) We were that standard, perfect family with the white picket fence and we also went to naturist resorts.
Angela continues with her narrative, and I never heard naturist resorts mentioned again. I even located another post that says her father told her, I made dumb mistakes about the naturist colony and the running around with your clothes off
Nonetheless, despite the fact that there was never any link specifically made between naturismand molestation, her casual comment in her introduction greatly suggested that there is a clear one.
Angela Shelton, celebrity who grew up as a nudist
I was so mad when I heard Angela say that to Ricki! I thought it was totally irresponsible and misleading. As if ALL kids who go to nudist resorts are automatic targets of sexual abuse. There’s a huge difference between a family-friendly nudist resort and an orgy!
One is a place where adults go to have sex. The other is a spot for folks of ages to enjoy leisurely tasks while naked. A awfully mistaken notion is that nudity is only sexual. When a small child tears off his or her diaper and exclaims, I’m nakey, it is never for any sexual purpose. It is because it is natural. They haven’t been educated that it’s bad or black to be nude. I believe this healthy attitude should not be stomped on. That’s part of what results in body shame and phobia.
I may also understand how her personal view points of nudism and nudist resorts would be a negative one. Particularly if it were directly linked to her abuse.
But to imply the two are mechanically linked is what I have an problem with. A child isn’t any more likely to be abused nude than they are clothed. Of all the horrible stories I’ve discovered in the news about similar occurrences, I’ve never heard one talking about nudism.
and the answer was so area on: Of course! But that’s because I’m a mom, not because my child is unclothed. In the words of every Family Feud contestant ever: Great Response!
